U9B Coach's Letter

Dear KGHA families,

My name is Kayla Warchow and I’m very excited to step into the role of head coach for this upcoming U9 competitive season. Girl’s hockey has been a big part of my life for many years, having played at a competitive level and now entering my third year of coaching with KGHA. I’m passionate about creating an environment where players can develop their skills, build confidence, and most importantly, to truly enjoy the game I fell in love with as a 7-year-old girl - and still love today. I believe it is incredibly meaningful to have a woman leading and inspiring our young female athletes.

Through both my playing and coaching experience, I’ve learned that development goes far beyond systems and drills. My goal is to help each player grow not only as a hockey player, but also as a teammate and individual. I believe that when players feel supported, challenged, and valued, they perform at their best and develop a lasting love for the game.

My Coaching Philosophy

My coaching focuses on developing skills, effort, building a respectful, supportive team, and making learning fun along the way.

  • Development First: Skills first, smiles always! We will focus on core hockey skills - skating, puck control, passing, shooting - while gradually introducing age-appropriate systems and positionings.
  • Effort and Attitude: Hard work, positivity, and a willingness to learn are essential. Mistakes are part of the process, and how we respond to them is what matters most.
  • Team Mindset: Encouraging players to work together, respect each other, and grow as a team.

Goals for the Season

  • Create a fun, safe, and competitive environment. My goal is for every athlete to look forward to coming to the rink and having fun while learning.
  • Support each athlete’s individual development and confidence
  • Build strong team chemistry
  • Foster a love of the game that goes beyond wins and losses

Expectations for the Season

  • Athletes show up to practices and games prepared, focused, and ready to give their best effort
  • A positive attitude, even when facing challenges
  • Commitment to being a great, respectful teammate
  • Enjoy the game and have fun!

Team Fees

Team fees will be approximately $2,000, in addition to registration and tryout fees.

We will be organizing fundraising initiatives and seeking sponsorships to help offset these costs.

Tournaments: We will be taking part in 2 half-ice tournaments and 2 full-ice tournaments, in addition to provincials.

Half-Ice:

 - Etobicoke Pink the Rink (October 16-19 2026)

 - Kanata Light the Rink (November 2026)

Full-Ice:

 - Durham West Bolts & Hearts (February 12-14, 2027)

 - 1 more to be determined

 - Provincials (April 2027)

I am looking into scheduling dryland training every second Friday evening throughout the season.

Athletes who demonstrate solid fundamentals, have a positive attitude, and are eager to learn will thrive at tryouts.

For parents, your role is incredibly important in shaping your child’s experience. I encourage a positive and supportive presence from the stands, allowing the players to learn, grow, and enjoy the season.

I’m really looking forward to working with this group and building something special together.

See you at the rink!
